We’re releasing new tools to bring DICOM together with FHI R in the cloud so the health industry can do more with their data. Microsoft developers wanted to push the boundaries of FHIR and bridge the gap. It’s used in most health organizations for diagnosis alongside clinical inputs, and yet DICOM d ata is primarily maintained and managed independently of clinical data, creating barriers fo r access, reducing efficiency of use, and slowing the ability to re search with imaging data. DICOM is important because it e nsures that medical images meet quality standard s. DICOM ® (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is the international standard to transmit, store, retrieve, print, process, and display medical imaging information. ![]() Until now.Ī longside clinical data, medical i maging plays a critical role in patient diagnosis and care. F HIR normalizes the standard for clinical data exchange to the cloud, helping to reduce the cost of downstream development, accelerat ing machine learning, and expand ing opportun i ties for innovation.īut the use of FHIR for interoperability has only focused on structured clinical data. With health data, the o pen data frameworks of FHIR ® (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource ) have become a key tool for this transformatio n in the cloud. Getting the most fr om cloud computing isn’t just about moving data in existing custom formats, it’s about using the right tools to enrich and normalize your data on the way in so you can do more with it once it’s there. But as health data transitions to the next era of cloud computing, l eading health systems have quickly realiz ed that how they bring data to the cloud matter s. And that makes sense, because c loud t echnology can help improve data security, lower the cost of data management, and enable machine learnin g. ![]() Health systems around the globe are rapidly working to bring data into the clou d to improve patient diagnosis, the quality of care, and transformative learning about the way we deliver health care. Today Microsoft is releasing the Medical Imaging Server for DICOM, new Open Source Software (OSS) that provides developers with a powerful tool to migrate medical imaging data to the cloud and integrate imaging metadata with clinical data in FHIR using DICOM Cast technology.
